It’s been while since I went to a design event so I attended last week’s D&AD President’s Digital Pecha Kucha with some excitement. Although the digital advertising seems fairly removed from what we do at thinkpublic I was hoping to see some insights on how digital advertising agencies approach user interaction.
The format of Pecha Kutcha, 20 slides, 20 seconds and 12 speakers, ensured that all presentations were kept fresh and explored their various interests with enthusiasm rather than in-depth analysis.
My favourite speaker for making a point was:
Nat Hunter from Airside

For her reminder that digital industries role in climate change is as important as in other areas. Her talk was at odds with the visual silliness and playground humor of some of the other talks, her straightforward point combined with images of the massive server farms which keep the industry running provided a powerful argument.
Nat Hunter has recently set up a sustainable design initiative called Three Trees Don’t Make a Forest
My favorite speaker for entertainment was:
Tom Bazeley from Lean Mean Fighting Machine

For his heartwarming monologue which included everything that his studio liked and felt like the kind of presentation Alan Bennett or Martin Parr would give.
My favourite speaker for general interest was:
Daljit Singh from Digit
For telling us about his holiday to the North Korean Mass Games, which made me realise that showing something amazing but not directly related can be just as rewarding for the audience.
I came away feeling inspired by lots of great ideas and felt 100% visually stimulated. I only wish people could avoid boasting about how much beer they drank and refrained from swearing, there is absolutely no need, and it isn’t rock and roll, just childish.
The next lecture is by the dutch design agency Experimental Jetset which I’m really looking forward to.

Looks like an exciting event Paul, I like the sound of these pecha kucha presentations, they provide some healthy creative input to use as inspiration!
