London stops to play in the park

debs-and-snowman.jpgThe usual grown up experience of waking up on a Monday morning and getting ready for work was yesterday replaced by the child like excitement that it had snowed! The fact that most of London transports systems weren’t running due to ‘adverse weather conditions’, meant I couldn’t possibly travel to work and as I called each member of the thinkpublic team, to let them know they could work snugly from home, I could secretly tell that they would join the estimated one in five workers who took yesterday off as a “snow day” and all ventured out to make snowmen.

As I headed out to Hyde Park to join in the “snow day’ it was amazing to see families and people working together to roll gigantic snowballs and build giant towering snowmen. It really did feel like a national holiday!

I think we should have more fun national holidays where people come together and do something. For example in india they fly kites and throw colour, what could we do in the uk?

  1. I was really amazed by the shift in the atmosphere, everyone was talking to each other, smiling at passers by and building snowmen together.

It’s really amazing how people come together, and develop a sense of community in times like this.
People are in a situation where we have a shared common unity, in yesterdays circumstances, it was snow.

Often we find this common unity occurring when things go wrong, like in the war or after a terror attack, but I have spoken to quite a lot of people about this and we believe that snow is definitely the best, and most fun way to get people together!

  2. For a start we should have our national day ‘St Georges Day’ made a bank holiday, like every other country.

We could do with some more cheerful stuff happening around this time of year too, although Guy Fawkes night is an excellent, and strange event that also brings people together.

  3. I love the idea of having a national day where everyone PARTYS together…

  4. Lets have a party with hula hoops…! I think they are a great way of getting everyone together and having a laugh.
