I recently went to see the film ‘Be Kind Rewind’, it’s a film
about an independent video shop and it’s fight to avoid being knocked down and redeveloped.
The film is interesting when the owners begin making their own versions of famous films, or ‘Sweeding’ as they call it, there is one scene which I particularly enjoyed as it bore a striking resemblance to some of our projects.
“If we make the films and invite people to star in them then they won’t feel ripped off and will want to be involved”
People were involved in the process of making the film, rather than simply buying the final product. The film ended by engaging the whole community in making a film about an old local jazz musician which everyone starred in.
The film has prompted a number of ’sweeded’ versions produced by fans, a number of which are on YouTube.
Above, you can see the director of Be Kind Rewind, Michel Gondry’s version.
